Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

So how good are the Carolina Panthers?

We're about to find out.

The Panthers have made it cleanly through the cupcake portion of their schedule but are likely to face playoff contenders from here on out.

After taking care of business against Oakland and Detroit, two teams with a combined 2-18 record, the Panthers play six games against teams with a .500 record or better—four of those on the road—to close the regular season.

The tough stretch begins with an NFC South showdown this Sunday at Atlanta. Then the Panthers head to Green Bay (5-5), return home to play Tampa Bay (7-3) and Denver (6-4), then head back out on the road to close the season against the New York Giants (9-1) and New Orleans (5-5).

Although the Panthers are off to...

Offseason decision to trade Jenkins fuels Panthers (AP)

This Oct. 12, 2008 file photo shows New York Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, his gloves on his facemask, as he comes out for pregame warmups before an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. By ridding themselves of a player who clearly wanted out, the Panthers' locker room bears no resemblance to the past two years. It's not just that Jenkins and his high-pitched laugh are gone, so is the tension, negativity and individualism that took up even more space than the massive defensive lineman.

Kris Jenkins is having one of his best seasons, dominating at nose guard and helping the New York Jets become a playoff contender. The Carolina Panthers sure made a mistake trading the three-time Pro Bowl selection for third- and fifth-round draft picks, right? Wrong. The move may be the biggest reason the Panthers (8-2) have the third-best record in the NFL.

Trepidation follows Panthers despite 8-2 record (AP)
The Carolina Panthers have won four straight games, have the third-best record in the NFL and have already surpassed last year's win total. They're 6-0 at home, 8-2 overall, lead the NFC South and appear in great position to end a two-year playoff drought. Now that that's out of the way: What's wrong with them?

Panthers' running game keeps Lions winless 31-22 (AP)

Detroit Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper (11) dives over the goal line for a touchdown during the second half of an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008. The Panthers won 31-22.

Jake Delhomme was eager to make up for the worst game of his career. He settled for handing off to his two dynamic running backs. Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams bolted through huge holes in a record-setting day on the ground for the Carolina Panthers, who needed that dominance to hold off the winless Detroit Lions 31-22 on Sunday.
