A Brief History

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (often abbreviated as the Bucs) are a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida. They are currently members of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team, along with the Seattle Seahawks, joined the NFL as 1976 expansion teams. The club is currently owned by Malcolm Glazer and coached by head coach Jon Gruden. When the franchise entered the league in 1976, the Buccaneers lost their first 26 games. After a brief winning era in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the team suffered through fourteen consecutive losing seasons. From 1996 until 2005, however, they were a consistent contender, and won Super Bowl XXXVII at the end of the 2002 season which, to this date, has been their only Super Bowl appearance.

Jackson leads Tampa Bay over Houston (AP)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh Johnson (11) gets off a pass under pressure from Houston Texans' Kevis Coley (53) during the fourth quarter of their preseason NFL football game Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, in Houston. The Buccaneers defeated the Texans 16-6.

With three catches this preseason, Dexter Jackson probably isn't the receiver Tampa Bay has been looking for to play opposite Joey Galloway. That's OK. The speedy rookie is finding other ways to contribute. Jackson returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and the Buccaneers' backups beat Houston's 16-6 on Thursday night in the preseason finale for both teams.

Chukwurah signs with Buccaneers (AP)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed veteran defensive end Patrick Chukwurah on Thursday. Chukwurah originally signed with the Bucs as a free agent in March 2007. He appeared in nine games last season, finishing with 16 tackles and one sack. He was released on June 20. Chukwurah has also played for Minnesota and Denver since being a fifth-round pick by the Vikings out of Wyoming in 2001.

Buccaneers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Bucs know all about the up-and-down nature of the NFC South. In fact, they are responsible for it.

Tampa Bay has won the division three times in the past six years. But there has never been a repeat champion.

That's the task of the Bucs this season. But continuity - especially at the quarterback position - has never been a strong suit of coach Jon Gruden.

This season, Jeff Garcia could provide that as he returns for his second season after leading the Bucs to a divisional title and being named to the Pro Bowl. However, that didn't stop Gruden's wandering eye.

Garcia has had to deal with a lot of off-season debris, like getting stiffed by the team on a $1-million playing time incentive, the lack of a contract extension and the futile flirtation with Brett...
